In the rolling dunes and quiet streets of Mid-Cape, where the biggest excitement is usually a particularly aggressive seagull, a lonely retiree has taken to Craigslist with a plea that is equal parts poignant and… creative.
“Retired guy looking for Peggy (Mid-Cape),” the ad begins. “Missing my Peggy! I thought she would never leave me behind. If you know her or are a friend maybe you could back me up sometime.”
Attached is a purple circle on a map of Falmouth, as if the object of his affection is somehow geographically constrained to a half-mile radius near Palmer Avenue.
At first glance, it reads like a classic missed-connections heartbreaker: an older gentleman longing for the woman who once filled his golden years with companionship. But the more you sit with the language, the more it starts to… throb with alternative meaning.
“Missing my Peggy.”
“I thought she would never leave me behind.”
“Maybe you could back me up sometime.”
This is not a search for a woman named Peggy. This is a carefully coded request for someone to step up, take charge, and administer a thorough pegging. The kind of deep, respectful, retiree-approved reverse cowgirl (or reverse whatever-position-works-best-for-the-knees) that only the most sophisticated Craigslist poets attempt.
The map is the chef’s kiss. He’s not looking for Peggy in Falmouth. He’s looking for someone in Falmouth who is willing to, shall we say, explore the back roads of his personal Cape Cod. The purple circle might as well be labeled “Insert Here.”
One can almost picture the man drafting this at the kitchen table, muttering, “Too direct and the mods will flag it. Too subtle and no one will get it. Perfect. ‘Back me up sometime’ is pure poetry.”
Whether any local Peggie (or Peggy-adjacent individual with the proper equipment and enthusiasm) answers the call remains to be seen. But one thing is certain: somewhere in Mid-Cape, a retired gentleman is sitting by the phone, waiting for someone to help him feel less… left behind.
Godspeed, anonymous poster. May your circle be filled.
