What Is a Spammy IP Address?

A spammy IP address is an Internet Protocol (IP) address flagged for abusive behavior like sending unsolicited bulk emails (spam), phishing, botnet activity, or similar malicious actions. Simply search “what is my IP” to find your current address, then enter it into any of these tools. Most normal users will see a clean result.

VPNs VS Spammy IP Addresses 

VPN IPs are not the same as Spammy IPs - but they often get treated with extra caution.Quick Breakdown:

• Spammy IP = An IP with a reputation for sending spam, phishing, or running botnets/malicious activity. It’s on spam blocklists (like Spamhaus) due to actual abuse history.
• VPN IP = An IP belonging to a VPN service. These are shared by many users and are not automatically spammy. However:
  • Many websites and platforms (including Craigslist, banks, Google, social media, etc.) flag or block VPN IPs because they are associated with higher fraud risk, account abuse, or attempts to hide identity.
  • VPN IPs frequently show up on “proxy/VPN/datacenter” lists rather than pure spam lists.
  • Some VPN servers do end up on spam blocklists if other users on that same server abuse them (e.g., sending spam through the VPN).  

For Craigslist SpecificallyUsing a VPN makes it more likely (not less) that your ad or account could face issues, because Craigslist is known to be quite strict with VPNs, proxies, and datacenter IPs. Many users report ads being removed or accounts flagged when using VPNs.
